In a recent interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time, Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Minister of Information, stated that Peter Obi would defeat any Northern candidate in the 2027 presidential election if he returns to the PDP. Gana’s comments come amid renewed speculation about Obi’s political future and his possible re-entry into the PDP, following his recent involvement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The former minister admitted that the PDP mishandled Obi’s departure ahead of the 2023 elections, suggesting that Atiku Abubakar should have stepped aside or offered Obi the vice-presidential ticket. According to Gana, such a gesture would have demonstrated strategic foresight and party unity. He suggested that internal decisions at the time failed to consider long-term political advantages.

Addressing the PDP’s recent internal conflicts, Gana downplayed their significance, describing them as disputes among a few elites in Abuja. He reminded Nigerians of the PDP’s grassroots origins and its dominance in the 1999 elections, which restored democracy in Nigeria. Gana reaffirmed the party’s broad national structure and its foundational slogan, “power to the people,” arguing that PDP remains deeply rooted in the people despite elite-level challenges.
