Violence broke out in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State after the death of a young motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who died in police custody.
According to police reports, Musa was arrested for allegedly reckless driving under the influence of drugs. He later fell ill in custody and died at Rano General Hospital. His death sparked outrage among local youths who accused the police of brutality, leading to a protest that turned violent.
During the unrest, protesters reportedly set parts of the Rano Divisional Police Station on fire, vandalized property, and looted the premises. Two vehicles were torched, and ten others damaged. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who sustained serious injuries during the attack, later died at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. Police confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects and stated that a full investigation is underway. Some locals claimed police opened fire during the protest, injuring two youths who are now hospitalized.
In a separate incident in Benue State, seven people died in a lone accident involving a cement-laden truck on the Katsina-Ala-Zaki Biam Road. The truck reportedly lost control after hitting a pothole, causing it to overturn. Local residents rescued six injured occupants, while two escaped unharmed. Authorities have cleared the accident site to restore traffic flow.
