Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed chilling details of how he narrowly escaped a death plan allegedly orchestrated by former Head of State, General Sani Abacha. Speaking at the dedication of a church in Imo State, Obasanjo recalled how Abacha boasted that he, Chief MKO Abiola, and General Shehu Yar’Adua would not leave prison alive in a bid to solidify his grip on power.
Obasanjo, however, attributed his survival to the special grace of God, emphasizing that he had not committed any crime and had to rely on divine protection during his incarceration.
He recounted his initial confusion upon arrest, but eventually accepted his fate, praying for forgiveness for his captors. Obasanjo stressed that his escape from death was not due to his strength or influence, but God’s unmerited favor. He noted that out of the three intended victims, only he survived, a fact he views as a testament to divine mercy.
Obasanjo made these remarks during the commissioning of “The Noah’s Ark,” a newly constructed Assemblies of God Church in Ogbor Uvuru, Aboh Mbaise, built by philanthropist Obioma Success Akagburuonye. He praised Akagburuonye’s dedication and likened the grace in his life to the divine grace Obasanjo himself experienced. The former president also paid homage to Akagburuonye’s 104-year-old mother, kneeling before her in reverence.
The church building, modeled after the Biblical Noah’s Ark, was described by its builder as a symbol of faith, obedience, and salvation. Akagburuonye explained that the project was inspired by the Holy Spirit, representing the importance of trusting in God’s promises even in the face of doubt and ridicule. The event attracted religious leaders, dignitaries, and faithful from various parts of the country and beyond.
