The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) chapter, has firmly rejected President Bola Tinubu’s decision to rename the university after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued by its chairman, Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, ASUU described the move as “politically motivated” and “a brazen affront” to the university’s legacy, history, and academic integrity.
The renaming, announced during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in Buhari’s honour on July 17, has sparked widespread criticism within and beyond the university.
ASUU said the union is mobilizing its Congress, veterans, and extended executive members to resist the decision. “This action is not just shocking—it desecrates the sanctity of our alma mater,” the statement read, especially as the institution prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary under its well-known identity, UNIMAID.
The union warned that changing the name would sacrifice the university’s hard-earned reputation for political reasons.
