Two explosions on Wednesday night hit flow stations near the Cawthorne Channel, off the coast of Bonny in Rivers State, causing significant damage and raising fears of casualties.
The affected facilities, located about 30 nautical miles from Bonny, are part of a major oil and gas hub near the boundary of Bonny and Degema Local Government Areas.
Videos shared by community members showed the stations engulfed in flames, with speculation that a welding operation may have triggered the fire. Officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited visited the site, but no official statement has been issued.
Rivers State Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing.
