The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it an unconstitutional power grab. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP rejected the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the appointment of retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas, labeling it an attack on democracy.

The party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the crisis to take control of the state and weaken political opposition nationwide. It argued that the declaration fails to meet constitutional requirements and violates Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates National Assembly approval for emergency rule.
The PDP warned Vice Admiral Ibas against assuming office and vowed to resist any attempt to undermine democracy. As the House of Representatives prepares to debate Tinubu’s emergency rule request, the nation awaits a potential constitutional standoff.
