The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been given seven days by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to account for more than ₦126.46 billion in public funds allegedly diverted, lost, mismanaged or otherwise unaccounted.
SERAP’s demand followed findings contained in the 2023 audited report of the Auditor-General of the Federation, published on August 7, 2026. The funds reportedly covered various electoral operations, including the procurement of ballot boxes, electoral devices, sensitive materials, result sheets, vehicles and other services.
According to SERAP, the Auditor-General raised concerns over several payments, including more than ₦112 billion for ballot boxes and electoral materials, as well as billions of naira paid for other contracts allegedly without proper procurement procedures or evidence that some items were supplied.
SERAP is asking INEC to provide details of the payments, beneficiaries, contracts and evidence of delivery and utilisation. It also urged the commission to refer suspected financial misconduct to the EFCC and ICPC for investigation and recovery, warning that it may take legal action if INEC fails to respond within seven days.
