The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is promoting mandatory drug testing for all prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members as part of its strategy to combat drug abuse among Nigerian youths. NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), emphasized this during a “Training the Trainer” event in Abuja, aimed at equipping religious and community leaders to prevent drug use and support affected families.
Represented by Mrs. Ngozi Madubuike, Director of Drug Demand Reduction, Marwa explained that drug testing during NYSC orientation would deter drug use and allow early intervention for those in need. This initiative aligns with the broader War Against Drug Abuse campaign and is already being implemented in some universities and states.
The NDLEA provides affordable drug test kits and trained officers for testing and seeks to extend these measures to other sectors, despite facing some opposition. Marwa underscored the role of parents, educators, and community leaders in tackling the root causes of drug abuse, which include social and environmental issues beyond the agency’s control.
Supporting the initiative, childhood education expert Juliet Michael stressed the importance of restoring moral values in homes, while participant Iyenoma Osazee noted the programme’s potential to aid in early detection and treatment of drug use. The event highlighted the need for united national efforts to reverse the growing trend of substance abuse among Nigerian youths.
