Japan To Introduce New Visa Category, Designates Kisarazu as Nigerian’s Official Hometown

In a move aimed at boosting cultural exchange and addressing Japan’s demographic challenges, a new visa category will be introduced for skilled Nigerians, artisans, and workers seeking to upskill to strengthen cultural and economic relations.

Japan has also designated Kisarazu City as the official hometown for Nigerians living and working in the country. This was announced during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama.

Alongside Nigeria, other African countries also received designated hometowns: Tanzania was paired with Nagai, Ghana with Sanjo, and Mozambique with Imabari. The initiative, driven by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), seeks to build people-to-people connections, enhance municipal partnerships, and support local development in these Japanese cities.

Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to Japan, Mrs. Florence Akinyemi Adeseke, and Kisarazu’s Mayor, Mr. Yoshikuni Watanabe, formally received the certificate of designation. Authorities in Kisarazu expressed optimism that the partnership would help revitalize the city, which already shares a special bond with Nigeria after hosting Team Nigeria during their training camp for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

At TICAD9, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba pledged $5.5 billion in new investments for Africa. He outlined three key areas of focus: private sector-led growth, youth and women empowerment, and regional integration. Acknowledging Japan’s own domestic issues such as an ageing population, he called for deeper cooperation with African nations to create sustainable, shared solutions.
