The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kebbi Area Command, has equipped its officers and men with basic firefighting skills and equipment to strengthen their ability to prevent and respond to fire emergencies during a training held on Thursday, 20 August 2026, at the Command Headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.
The training, organised in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service (FFS), was chaired by Deputy Comptroller of Customs Ibrahim Yusuf, who represented the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller of Customs Mahmoud Ibrahim, and was attended by senior officers and men of the Command.
Speaking during the programme, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Yusuf stressed that fire safety is a responsibility shared by everyone, noting that fires can occur unexpectedly and that the right knowledge, equipment, and response skills can prevent a small incident from becoming a major disaster.
“Fire safety is not only about having firefighting equipment; it is about having the knowledge and confidence to use that equipment when it matters most. By equipping our officers with these skills, we are strengthening their ability to protect lives and property within the Command and in the communities where they live.” He said.
The Federal Fire Service resource person, Deputy Superintendent of Fire Kabiru Muhammad, commended the CAC for providing the necessary firefighting equipment and facilitating the training. He urged the officers to take the training seriously, stressing that the skills acquired could help save lives and protect property during emergencies.
The training covered the causes and prevention of fire, principles of fire extinction and the proper use of fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire buckets. Participants also took part in practical demonstrations, where they practised using firefighting equipment under the supervision and guidance of fire safety professionals.
The Command’s preparedness was further enhanced by providing fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment, ensuring officers have both the knowledge and tools required to take appropriate action when faced with an emerging fire incident.
