Trump Seeks Supreme Court Approval for Wartime Deportation Law

President Donald Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court’s ban on his use of the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members without due process. The law, previously invoked only during wars, was used to justify deportations to El Salvador, where detainees were sent to a high-security prison.

A federal judge blocked further deportations, ruling that migrants are entitled to individual hearings. The Trump administration argues that presidential authority should override judicial intervention in national security matters. Critics, including rights groups and the ACLU, challenge the legality of using a wartime law without an official declaration of war. The Supreme Court’s conservative majority will now weigh the case’s implications for executive power.
