Seychelles Opposition Leader Defeats Incumbent President, Pledged To Lower The Cost of Living

“I will be the president of all Seychellois, and I will end divisions by ceasing preferences and giving everyone the opportunity to thrive,” Seychelles’ Opposition Leader Patrick Herminie declared after he won the presidential election, defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan who secured 47.3% with 52.7% of the vote.

In his victory speech, Herminie, a former speaker of the country’s parliament had faced witchcraft charges in 2023, but the charges were dropped in 2024, has pledged to lower the cost of living and unite the nation, calling the result “a new chapter for all Seychellois.”

The election went to a runoff after no candidate secured a majority in the first round.

Patrick Herminie party, United Seychelles, also won last month’s parliamentary elections, regaining control from Ramkalawan’s Linyon Demokratik Seselwa.
