Rescued After Four Years: Spanish Police Free Children Locked Indoors Since 2021

In a shocking rescue operation in Oviedo, Spain, three young boys—twin eight-year-olds and their ten-year-old brother—were discovered after being imprisoned indoors by their parents for nearly four years. The children, who had not seen sunlight since 2021, were rescued by police and witnessed the outdoors with wonder and fear. They stumbled into the garden barefoot, wearing diapers, and were visibly overwhelmed by sensations like grass and snails.

The parents, a German-American mother and a German father, had allegedly kept the children locked away to “protect them from illness,” isolating the family since the COVID-19 pandemic. Their home was described as a “house of horrors,” filled with filth, pet waste, and caged beds. Neighbors, unaware of the children’s existence, eventually alerted authorities after hearing faint voices. When police intervened, they found the children unkempt but not malnourished, and speaking mostly English.

The children are now under the protective care of the Government of the Principality of Asturias. Their parents, aged 48 and 53, have been arrested and are facing multiple charges, including child abuse, unlawful detention, and violating fundamental rights. The case has sparked widespread outrage and concern about how such prolonged abuse could go unnoticed for so long.
