The World Health Organization has warned that Nigeria and seven other countries may face HIV drug shortages due to the U.S. decision to halt foreign aid.
WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus stated that the disruption could reverse 20 years of progress, potentially leading to over 10 million new HIV cases and three million deaths.
The Nigerian government has responded by approving $1.07 billion for healthcare reforms and allocating additional funds for HIV treatment. However, the WHO warns that TB, malaria, and polio programs are also at risk, urging the U.S. to ensure an orderly transition in funding.
