A deadly midnight flood struck Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State following hours of intense torrential rainfall, resulting in the recovery of no fewer than 21 bodies and many more reported missing. The disaster, which occurred on Tuesday night, caught residents and commuters off guard, submerging approximately 50 residential houses and causing massive destruction in the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities.

Numerous vehicles, including trucks, private cars, and commercial vehicles, were also trapped in the flood. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as drivers and passengers struggled through rising waters without immediate help. Rescue efforts were initially absent, leaving many victims vulnerable to the raging floodwaters.
As of the time of the report, the bodies recovered included a woman and her two children. Meanwhile, a few survivors, including another woman and her two children, were being treated for injuries and shock at Mokwa General Hospital. Several others also sustained injuries in the flood.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the scale of the disaster and announced ongoing search and rescue operations. The agency is working in collaboration with the Mokwa Local Government Authority, local divers, and volunteers to locate survivors and retrieve bodies. The situation remains critical as rescue efforts continue.
