The Lagos State Task Force conducted a surprise operation at Mile 2 on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, impounding 82 commercial motorcycles (Okadas) in an effort to enforce the state’s ban on their operations. Though no operators were arrested, the raid quickly turned chaotic as some riders resisted and fled, leading to a tense confrontation.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as disorderly, with Okada riders throwing objects at task force operatives and some abandoning their bikes to avoid arrest. The operation extended to other areas, such as Second Rainbow and Toyota bus stop, with over 15 task force vehicles involved.
Despite the crackdown, many commercial motorcyclists returned to the area shortly after the task force left, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the enforcement. Observers noted that this ongoing “cat-and-mouse” game suggests a need for a more sustainable solution to the Okada ban.
