Catholic Priest and Seminarian Kidnapped in Edo, Police Launch Rescue Operation

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Rev. Father Philip Ekeli and seminarian Peter Andrew from St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Ivukwa, Etsako East LGA. The attack, which occurred on March 3 at 11:30 pm, involved armed gunmen who violently broke into the church and rectory, overpowering local vigilantes.

In response, the police and local hunters launched a rescue operation, killing one suspect and arresting four others, though the kidnappers escaped with the victims. Recovered items included cash, a dagger jacket, and personal belongings.

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi expressed deep concern over the rising kidnappings of priests in Edo North, describing the area as a “business center for kidnappers” and urging the government to address security challenges. Meanwhile, police and military forces have intensified efforts to secure the release of the abducted priest and seminarian.
