Labour Party Suspends Julius Abure, Farouk Umar Over Financial Misconduct

The Labour Party National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC), led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has suspended former National Chairman Julius Abure and former Secretary Farouk Umar for six months following an investigation into financial misconduct and anti-party activities. The decision, announced in a statement co-signed by LP-NCC Secretary Senator Darlington Nwokocha, was based on the findings of a disciplinary panel led by Senator Ireti Kingibe. The committee uncovered significant financial improprieties, including unauthorized bank withdrawals and transfers allegedly executed by Abure and Umar.

As part of the disciplinary action, both Abure and Umar are barred from representing the party in any capacity during the suspension period, and all members of Abure’s National Working Committee have been directed to cease functioning as party executives. The LP leadership emphasized that further violations could lead to more severe sanctions, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability.

This development follows a prior move by the Abure-led faction to suspend notable figures like Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Senator Ireti Kingibe. However, the Usman-led faction dismissed the move, asserting that the Supreme Court had already nullified Abure’s authority within the party. The internal crisis continues to deepen, reflecting the intense struggle for control within the Labour Party’s leadership.
