Israel has commenced a large-scale evacuation of its citizens stranded abroad following heightened conflict with Iran. On Friday, the first passenger ship carrying over 1,500 Israelis docked safely at Ashdod Port from Limassol, Cyprus. The journey was part of the Ministry of Transportation’s “Operation Safe Return” and was protected by an Israeli Navy missile boat to ensure the passengers’ safety amid regional instability.

The evacuation became necessary after Israel launched strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites on June 13, prompting the closure of its airports and cancellation of outbound flights. These military actions followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of an extended campaign against Iran, and warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump about a looming “massive conflict” in the Middle East.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Transport, between 100,000 and 150,000 Israeli citizens were left stranded globally due to the sudden halt in flights. About 5,000 were flown back on Wednesday and Thursday, with the number expected to double by Friday. Meanwhile, Israel’s national carrier, El Al, has begun operating recovery flights from various international locations, including Europe, the United States, and Thailand.
