The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a full-day lockdown across Biafra land on May 30, 2025, in remembrance of Biafran heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives during the Nigeria-Biafra war and in the continued struggle for independence.

The group emphasized that this annual event, known as Biafra Heroes Memorial Day, will include memorial lectures and calls for reflection by families across the region. IPOB has notified South East and South South governors and has requested public observance of the day.
According to the IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the sit-at-home order will begin at 6 am and end at 6 pm on May 30. During this period, there will be no public gatherings, school activities, religious services, or market openings. Biafrans are encouraged to stay indoors with their families to reflect on the historical genocide from 1967 to 1970 and ongoing marginalization. The group has also informed WAEC about the date to allow adjustments in exam schedules to accommodate affected students.
IPOB stressed that no protests will be held within Biafra land or anywhere in Nigeria to avoid confrontations with security forces. However, Biafrans in the diaspora are encouraged to hold peaceful demonstrations or town hall meetings to honour the fallen heroes and press for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The statement paid tribute to iconic figures such as Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Gen. Phillip Efiong, and others who played key roles in the struggle.
IPOB reiterated that this memorial is not only a solemn tribute but also a form of peaceful resistance and solidarity. The group underlined its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring that the remembrance remains violence-free. Emergency and essential workers, including medical personnel, journalists, and security officials, are exempted from the lockdown.
