Following reports of attacks and other forms of hostility against foreign nationals, the National Assembly has suspended all official visits to South Africa and announced a boycott of legislative activities hosted by the country.
The lawmakers expressed concern over the safety and treatment of Nigerians in the country amid continuing reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals living in South Africa viewed as a response to the recurring incidents and a call for stronger protection of Nigerians abroad.
Under the boycott, Nigerian lawmakers are expected to stay away from South African-hosted legislative programmes and related official engagements. The decision could further draw attention to concerns surrounding xenophobia and the need for stronger measures to protect African nationals.
The National Assembly’s action also sends a diplomatic message to South African authorities over the reported attacks. Lawmakers are expected to continue monitoring developments while calling for the safety, dignity and protection of Nigerians and other African nationals living in South Africa.
