Former Head of State and NYSC founder, General Yakubu Gowon, praised the scheme’s management for upholding its founding vision during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, in Abuja.
Gowon acknowledged the initial resistance NYSC faced upon its establishment in 1973 but highlighted its transformation into a key institution promoting national unity, job creation, and youth empowerment. He commended the deployment policy for exposing Corps Members to diverse cultures and urged General Nafiu to build on past legacies.
In response, Nafiu described NYSC as a “divine project” and expressed gratitude for Gowon’s support, seeking his mentorship to further strengthen the scheme.
