The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that the death toll from the tanker explosion on the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has increased to 23. The incident, which occurred on January 25 due to a fuel tanker brake failure, initially claimed 11 lives, with more fatalities recorded over the following days.

Sector Commander Franklin Agbakoba revealed that two additional female victims recently passed away in hospital, bringing the total to 23. One died at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), while another passed at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu.
The explosion involved 44 people, 16 vehicles, and a commercial tricycle. Of the 23 injured victims, some remain hospitalized, while others have been discharged. However, a family of three opted for traditional treatment despite medical advice. Authorities continue to monitor the recovery of other victims.
