Nigeria to Launch Contactless Passport Renewal System in Europe

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) will launch a contactless passport renewal system for Nigerians in Europe on February 7, with the UK as the coordinating hub. This initiative allows Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports online without visiting physical offices, saving time and reducing travel costs.

The Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap, announced the development during a visit to NiDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa in Abuja. She clarified that the service is only available for renewals, excluding first-time applicants and minors. Nigerians can start the renewal process up to a year before their passport expires.

Nandap highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s directive to improve passport processing for Nigerians abroad. Plans are underway to open additional passport processing centers in New York and other locations.

Dabiri-Erewa described the initiative as a significant step toward efficient and secure passport processing, reaffirming NiDCOM’s support and collaboration. The contactless system was previously introduced in Canada with positive feedback.
