Abandoned Newborn Found in Abuja Community

A day-old baby was found abandoned in a carton near a poultry farm along a bush path in Jikoko village, located in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory. According to a resident identified as Aliyu, the discovery shocked the community. The baby, wrapped in cloth, was promptly rescued after residents alerted the police, who then took the infant to a nearby health center for medical attention.

The FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to trace the baby’s mother. The child is currently in the care of the social welfare department. This case adds to a growing trend of child abandonment in the region. A similar incident occurred in January 2025 in the same area, where a newborn was also abandoned and the mother later admitted to doing so due to poverty. The police command had previously raised concerns in December 2024 over the increasing number of such cases across Abuja.
