Drake paid special tribute this week to two of his fans who died after being hit by a car while leaving one of his recent concerts.
The “Started From the Bottom” rapper was filmed acknowledging the mother and daughter during a show at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
The Degrassi alum can be heard telling the packed indoor arena that a person can “never know what somebody else’s reality will be when they walk out of this building.” He then made a special request for his fans to “prove that you’re grateful for your life.”
“I want you to turn to somebody that you do not know—not somebody that you came here with,” the “Best I Ever Had” singer urged them. “I want you to take five seconds out of your day to make somebody else’s day. Just show some love. Because you never know what comes next.”
Drake, 37, told his listeners that he believes “one of the most important things in life” is the choice people make every day to either be a “decent person” or not. He then proved that point by announcing that he would gift $25,000 to a cancer survivor in the audience, who attracted his attention with a sign requesting a performance of his hit song “God’s Plan.”
The deceased fans Drake alluded to had attended his show in St. Louis on Feb. 14. The mother and her 21-year-old daughter were leaving the concert venue when a driver hit them after running a red light.
Though Drake is currently touring, the Canadian rapper told fans last fall that he intended to take a break from making new music amid ongoing health struggles. During his announcement, which came on the day of his For All the Dogs album release, Drake said the hiatus could last “maybe a year or something, maybe a little longer.”
