Knife Attack at Hamburg Central Station Leaves Several Critically Injured

A violent knife attack occurred at Hamburg Central Station on Friday evening, leaving 18 people injured, several of them with life-threatening wounds. The attack happened between platforms 13 and 14, during peak rush hour at one of Germany’s busiest transport hubs.

Emergency responders treated some victims inside trains, while the station saw significant disruption, including the closure of four platforms and train delays.

Police swiftly arrested a 39-year-old German woman at the scene and confirmed she acted alone. Authorities believe she was suffering from mental distress rather than being motivated by political or ideological reasons. The homicide division has launched a full investigation into her background and motives, while the suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on Saturday.

This attack adds to a recent string of violent incidents in Germany, including stabbings in Aschaffenburg and Berlin, and a deadly vehicle attack in Magdeburg. Unlike previous cases involving migrant suspects, this incident involved a German national, highlighting the complexity of addressing public safety and mental health. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack and praised emergency services for their rapid response.
