Calls for Justice and Calm After Uromi Killings

The recent mob killing of 16 hunters in Uromi, Edo State, has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, condemned the act, emphasizing the need for due process and urging citizens to avoid mob actions. He also stressed the importance of local hunters and vigilante groups registering with security agencies.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) strongly condemned the killings, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims. CAN highlighted the dangers of extrajudicial killings and called on the government to uphold the rule of law. PFN emphasized that even if the victims were suspected criminals, due process should have been followed.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo responded by suspending the head of the state security corps, Friday Ibadin, and banning illegal vigilante groups. Meanwhile, Kano State government dispatched a delegation to Edo to ensure justice for the victims, as most were from Kano.

Other leaders, including the Oluwo of Iwo and House of Representatives spokesperson Akin Rotimi, echoed calls for peaceful coexistence and national unity, stressing that Nigerians should feel safe in any part of the country.
