A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, killing at least 1,700 people and causing widespread destruction. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly, pulling survivors from collapsed buildings in Mandalay and the Sagaing region. In Thailand, 18 people have died, and 76 workers remain missing following the collapse of an unfinished high-rise in Bangkok.

The earthquake’s shallow depth intensified its impact, with tremors felt across Southeast Asia. Aftershocks, including a 5.1-magnitude tremor, continue to shake the region. International aid is arriving, with China, India, Malaysia, and other countries sending rescue teams and supplies. The UK has pledged £10 million in aid.
Despite the crisis, Myanmar’s military junta continues airstrikes in conflict zones. Rebel groups have announced a temporary pause in offensive operations to focus on relief efforts. With monsoon season approaching, further displacement and humanitarian challenges are expected.
