Tinubu Explains Decision to Appoint Bosun Tijani as Minister Despite Past Criticism

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that his decision to appoint Dr. Bosun Tijani as Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, despite his history of criticism, was based on his belief in recognizing talent over personal grievances. Tinubu made this known during a special Iftar at the Presidential Villa to mark his 73rd birthday.

Tijani, who was once outspoken against the government, recounted his surprise at being appointed, expecting backlash instead of an opportunity. Tinubu admitted that many of his close associates and senators opposed Tijani’s nomination due to his past remarks, but he overruled them, emphasizing that criticism should not overshadow competence.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio recalled how Tijani faced resistance during his confirmation hearing, with senators citing his past social media posts, including one where he allegedly called them “morons.” However, Akpabio noted that trust in Tinubu’s judgment ultimately led to Tijani’s approval. He praised the President’s ability to forgive and highlighted that Tijani has since proven to be one of the cabinet’s best-performing ministers.
