Over ₦10 million has been raised in just four days to help relocate 17-year-old Quadri Alabi, who was falsely accused of armed robbery by police in Lagos. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who revealed the update during a Channels TV interview, said the funds will also support Alabi’s mother, a petty trader, by helping her start a sustainable business.
Alabi became a public figure in 2023 after a viral photo showed him greeting Peter Obi’s campaign convoy. That fame, however, made him a target of extortion by local area boys who demanded a share of the donations he received. When he and his mother refused to comply, he was arrested and wrongly charged by the police, who even falsified his age to treat him as an adult in court.
Effiong described the actions of the Amukoko police and the area boys as part of a corrupt scheme to frame the teenager. He revealed that Alabi had no connection to the adults he was charged with, and no evidence linked him to the alleged crime. Following legal intervention, Alabi was released, and efforts are now focused on ensuring his safety and rebuilding his life.
