In his strong commitment to improving healthcare, strengthening research capacity, and investing in human capital development in Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni’s continues to transform Yobe State into a growing center of scientific excellence and innovation, he recently Commissioned a world class Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) with equipment worth 10billion Naira, the facility aimed at Strengthening Healthcare and Scientific Research.

The facility which was officially Commissioned on 29th January 2026, at Yobe State University is said to has within four years of its establishment, grown into a leading biomedical research institution in Nigeria. It is currently conducting one of the most comprehensive investigations into chronic kidney disease, focusing on Yobe State’s Bade Emirate.
Over 50 experts from Nigeria and abroad have participated in the research, with more than 3,000 human and environmental samples collected. Early findings indicate possible environmental factors, including water contamination.

BioRTC is equipped with world-class facilities valued at over ₦10 billion facilitated by its Director Professor Mahmud Bukar Maina, positioning it as a major hub for advanced medical research in the region.
The Centre is also manufacturing affordable, battery-powered open-science microscopes suitable for field deployment, including malaria diagnosis.

The Centre is advancing dementia and neuroscience research tailored to African populations and has supported the training of over 1,000 scientists in bio-imaging, infectious diseases, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience since 2022.
