Acccorfing to reports, many Nigerians living in the US, including students and professionals, have decided not to travel home for Christmas out of fear that they may be denied re-entry following a Fresh US travel restrictions announced by President Donald Trump. Some students said months of academic preparation could be wasted if they leave the US now, while others described widespread anxiety and disappointment among families expecting holiday reunions.
The fear is driven by reports of visa cancellations, detentions at US airports, and uncertainty about re-entry, even for people with valid visas or green cards.
The new announcement bars holders of B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M, and J visas from entering the US from January 1, 2026. These categories cover tourists, business travellers, students, and exchange visitors, affecting a wide range of Nigerians. The US government cited security concerns and high visa overstay rates as reasons for the restrictions.
Similarly, Nigerians in Nigeria who already hold US visas are shelving travel plans to avoid the risk of detention or deportation at US ports of entry. Reports of even green card holders being detained have heightened fears, with many choosing to “wait and see” rather than risk financial loss and emotional stress.
The uncertainty has also affected education plans, as some US universities have begun deferring or suspending admission offers for Nigerian students. With visa access unclear, institutions are advising students to postpone resumption, deepening concerns about the long-term impact of the policy on travel, education, and family connections.
