UK-Based Group Urges Tinubu to Reverse Fubara’s Suspension to Restore Nigeria’s Image

Progressives Without Borders, a group of concerned Nigerians based in the United Kingdom, has strongly condemned the recent proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.

The group described the actions as an abuse of executive power that contravenes democratic norms and federal principles. In a statement co-signed by its president, John Andrew, who also chairs the APC in South-East London, the group noted that these developments have seriously tarnished Nigeria’s international reputation and intensified concerns about the legitimacy of the Tinubu administration.

The group highlighted that the suspension of elected officials based on questionable constitutional interpretations further undermines the country’s democratic fabric, especially at a time when the last presidential election is already under scrutiny by international observers. They warned that the long-term implications could include the erosion of public trust in democratic institutions and increased political instability.

To address the crisis, Progressives Without Borders called on President Tinubu to revoke the suspension, restore democratic governance in Rivers State, and uphold the rule of law. They also urged the government to address the root causes of the conflict—political, economic, and social—through comprehensive reforms. The statement concluded by emphasizing the need for judicial independence, governmental transparency, and a sustained commitment to democratic values to repair Nigeria’s global standing.
