U.S. Introduce Visa Bond Requirements For Some Nigerian Travelers

Effective August 3, 2026, the United States has introduced a permanent Visa Bond Programme requiring certain Nigerian and other African applicants seeking B1 (business) and B2 (tourist) visas to pay a refundable bond before their visas can be issued. The policy is aimed at reducing visa overstays and encouraging compliance with U.S. immigration laws.

U.S. officials say under the programme, U.S. consular officers will determine whether an applicant must pay a bond and will set the amount at $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000, depending on the individual’s circumstances and risk assessment. The bond will be refunded if the traveler complies with the terms of the visa, including leaving the United States before the authorized stay expires.

Adding that, the measure is intended to strengthen immigration enforcement and reduce visa violations, while critics argue it could discourage legitimate business and tourist travel by imposing significant financial barriers on applicants from affected countries.
