Trump Lifts Restrictions on Immigration Arrests at Schools, Churches, and Hospitals

The Trump administration has reversed longstanding policies that designated schools, churches, and hospitals as off-limits for immigration enforcement, allowing U.S. immigration authorities to make arrests in these locations.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the policy change aims to prevent criminals from evading law enforcement, with Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman also reinstating expedited removal for undocumented individuals unable to prove continuous U.S. residence for over two years.

This move is part of a broader immigration crackdown, which includes executive actions to suspend the refugee system, restrict entry access apps, and enhance cooperation between ICE and local authorities. Nationwide operations to arrest and deport undocumented individuals are set to commence immediately.

The policy shift has sparked criticism from advocacy groups and religious leaders, who warn of potential harm to immigrant families, including deterrence from seeking essential services and increased trauma for children. Faith leaders have urged the administration to adopt a more compassionate approach.
