President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for reaching the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket for the fifth consecutive time. The victory came after a hard-fought 75-68 semi-final win over Senegal at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, marking their seventh consecutive win against the West African rivals.

In a statement released by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the team for their resilience, discipline, and consistent performance throughout the tournament. He described the semi-final clash against Senegal as “the final before the final,” acknowledging the high stakes and competitive intensity of the match.
The president particularly commended Head Coach Rena Wakama, the first woman to lead the national team, for her leadership and the inspiration she brings to the players. He highlighted the qualities of focus, discipline, and unity that have elevated the team’s profile on the global stage.
With this victory, D’Tigress not only secured a place in the final against Mali but also booked a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers. Tinubu expressed unwavering support for the team as they aim for a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and their seventh overall championship.
