Taraba Teachers Decry Six-Month Unpaid Salaries, Poor School Conditions

Primary school teachers in Taraba State are lamenting months of unpaid salaries and deteriorating school conditions, blaming the government’s failure to uphold its promises under the free education policy.

Despite the state declaring an emergency in the education sector in June 2023, many schools remain underfunded, with poor infrastructure and unpaid staff. Teachers report struggling to feed their families, forcing some to leave the profession.

A teacher from Central Primary School, Wukari, criticized the government’s inability to provide free uniforms and equipment as promised. She noted that parents, expecting full government support, now refuse to contribute to school materials, leaving schools in disarray.

With unpaid salaries, rising transportation costs, and worsening school conditions, teachers fear the system is collapsing, further affecting students’ education and welfare.
