Suspended Rivers Lawmakers Embark on UK Tour Amid Political Tensions

Despite their suspension, members of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, have traveled to the United Kingdom on a legislative tour.

The lawmakers, who were embroiled in a power tussle with Governor Siminalayi Fubara before a state of emergency was declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have largely remained out of the spotlight until now. It was reported that they and their families continued to reside in the legislative quarters in Port Harcourt even after the suspension.

A statement from Amaewhule’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu, confirmed the lawmakers’ departure, stating that the Speaker officially declared open the UK legislative tour on Friday.

According to Amaewhule, the purpose of the trip is to enhance the lawmakers’ capacity by exposing them to legislative practices beyond Nigeria’s borders, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding their suspension.
