More than 170 soldiers including been dismissed from the Guinea’s armed forces by President Mamadi Doumbouya including over allegations of desertion. The decision reportedly affects personnel accused of abandoning their duties without authorisation.
The list of those dismissed expertly included a colonel who reportedly played a role in helping Doumbouya seize power during the 2021 military coup that overthrew President Alpha Condé.
The move comes as Doumbouya continues to consolidate his authority over Guinea’s military and political affairs. The dismissal of officers linked to his rise to power has drawn attention to the changing dynamics within the country’s armed forces.
The development is expected to further highlight tensions surrounding military discipline and leadership in Guinea. Doumbouya took power in September 2021 and has since remained at the centre of the country’s transition from military rule toward civilian governance.
