Pope Francis’s funeral will be held on Saturday at 10:00 local time in front of St Peter’s Basilica, following his death on Easter Monday at age 88. His body, currently lying in Santa Marta chapel, will be moved to St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where the public can pay their respects. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, acting as camerlengo, will lead the transfer and a brief liturgy.

The funeral, to be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, will include global clergy and begin formal mourning rites. Honoring Pope Francis’s wishes, the ceremony avoids some traditional formalities; he will be buried in a simple wooden casket at St Mary Major rather than beneath St Peter’s Basilica. Global dignitaries, including President Trump and President Macron, are expected to attend.
