One person have been confirmed dead and several shops destroyed in a fatal tanker explosion after a tanker loaded with petrol collided with a Toyota Corolla and a tricycle in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The collision, which occurred in the early hours of November 21, 2025, caused the tanker to burst into flames, engulfing nearby shops and completely burning the involved vehicles. The tricycle rider was killed instantly, while some passengers sustained severe burns and were rushed to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion was loud and sudden, with the fire spreading rapidly before emergency services arrived. The inferno triggered panic, forcing motorists and residents to flee the area, while causing a significant traffic gridlock. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps quickly diverted traffic to prevent further casualties. Firefighters eventually contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading beyond the affected shops.
In response to the incident, the Anambra State Police Command condemned attempts by individuals and groups to spread misinformation and panic on social media regarding the explosion. The Commissioner of Police, CP Orutugu, has ordered an investigation to identify those behind a misleading online report about the event. The police emphasised their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that accurate information is disseminated to the public.
The Head of Media and Publicity for the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed that three fire trucks were deployed immediately after a distress call was received. He noted that one life was lost and about six shops were destroyed in the fire. Authorities have since launched a full investigation to determine the identities of the involved drivers and take necessary actions following the tragic incident.
