Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has accused the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of withholding her discharge certificate a year after completing her one-year mandatory service in Lagos State. Raye gained public attention months earlier after a viral video where she lamented the rising cost of living under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Some have questioned whether her outspokenness is linked to the delay in issuing her certificate.
On Instagram, Raye revealed that during the certificate collection alongside her colleagues, she was told she would not be issued hers. NYSC officials allegedly claimed she failed to do her April clearance on the scheduled date, a claim she firmly denies. According to her, she had shown up for clearance but was repeatedly told by her Local Government Inspector (LGI) to wait, only for the LGI to later refuse to clear her, seize her file, and order her to leave.
Raye expressed deep frustration, describing her service year in Lagos as a waste of time and lamenting the alleged mistreatment. She recounted how the LGI deliberately delayed attending to her until the end, then used the missed clearance accusation as grounds to withhold her certificate. The incident has left her with “deep-rooted anger” and disappointment, as she feels there is little hope for a fair resolution.
Calls have been made for urgent intervention, with some public figures stressing that it is unacceptable for someone who served without formal queries to be denied their certificate. As of the time of reporting, the NYSC had not issued any official response to the allegations. The discharge certificate is a crucial document for Nigerian graduates, certifying their successful completion of the national service.
