Onitiri Urges Political Restraint Ahead of 2027 Elections

Elder statesman Chief Adesunbo Onitiri has issued a cautionary statement directed at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-governors Nasir El Rufai and Peter Obi, urging them to avoid actions or remarks that could destabilize Nigeria’s political climate. With the 2027 general elections approaching, Onitiri called for greater restraint and patriotism from these influential political figures.

Speaking from Lagos, Onitiri highlighted the dangers of escalating political tensions, warning that such instability could be exploited by anti-democratic forces. Reflecting on his experience during the 1993–1994 pro-democracy struggle, he stressed the importance of defending Nigeria’s democratic gains rather than jeopardizing them through reckless political behavior.

Onitiri emphasized the urgency of national unity in the face of Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. He appealed to both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties to set aside partisan interests and collaborate for the greater good of the country and its citizens.

He also condemned Atiku Abubakar’s alleged attempt to involve an American court in seeking President Bola Tinubu’s disqualification, labeling it as inappropriate and widely unacceptable. Onitiri insisted that the opposition should allow the president to focus on governance and the delivery of democratic dividends, rather than engaging in divisive tactics.
