Despite a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and other lawmakers at the State House, Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has not withdrawn his lawsuit against the Assembly.
At a resumed hearing on Monday at the Lagos State High Court, lawmakers were surprised to find that Obasa was still pursuing legal action against the institution he leads.
A legislator, speaking anonymously, expressed shock that Obasa remained firm despite interventions from Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, and Aremo Olusegun Osoba.
Tinubu had reportedly directed Lagos lawmakers to cooperate with Obasa while instructing the Speaker to withdraw his lawsuit against the Assembly and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
Meanwhile, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos High Court dismissed Obasa’s application to change the legal representation of the Assembly, ruling that Femi Falana (SAN) will remain the official counsel. Obasa’s lawyer, Olusola Idowu (SAN), argued that the Assembly had the right to appoint new counsel, but Falana countered that he had not been formally debriefed.
Additionally, 33 of the 40 lawmakers, represented by Olu Daramola (SAN), opposed Obasa’s stance, insisting that the suspension of Clerk Olalekan Onafeko was valid and that Falana should remain the Assembly’s legal representative.
