Oba of Benin Announces Funeral Rites for Late Iyoba Ewuare II After 49 Years

The Oba of Benin, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has released the schedule for the long-awaited funeral rites of his mother, Iyoba Omo N’Ikuoyemwen, Iyoba Ewuare II, who passed away 49 years ago.

According to Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), the funeral could not take place until the former Crown Prince was crowned Oba in line with Benin traditions. In 2021, Oba Ewuare II posthumously honored his mother by conferring the title of Iyoba upon her.

The private royal ceremonies will commence on February 15th, 2025, with Iwarinmwin at Eguae Iyoba N’Uselu, lasting until February 28th. This will be followed by Ekasa performances from March 1st to March 27th, with the grand finale scheduled at the Oba’s Palace on March 27th.

During this period, the use of traditional coral beads in the kingdom is suspended, and the entire period is declared one of mourning.
