The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and National Population Commission (NPC) are collaborating to streamline the registration process for the National Identification Number, ensuring that all Nigerians can easily access this critical national identity document and unlock a range of benefits and opportunities.
The partnership between NIMC and NPC comes at a time when the Nigerian Communications Commission has set September 14, 2024, as the final deadline for linking Subscriber Identification Modules to National Identity Numbers.
Currently, over 153 million SIMs are linked, achieving a compliance rate of 96 per cent, up from 69.7 per cent in January 2024.
According to a statement obtained by The PUNCH on Sunday, the Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, stated that the collaboration demonstrates the commitment of both agencies to achieving President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to strengthen digital identity and birth registration in Nigeria.
She noted that the partnership aimed to increase the pace of birth registration and NIN issuance, ensuring that all Nigerians, particularly children under 16, have access to government services and benefits.
According to Coker-Odusote, birth registration is a fundamental right and crucial for national development, enabling access to education, healthcare, and social benefits.
