Nigeria can feed itself, No need for importation – FG

The Federal Government has declared that Nigeria has the capacity to sustain itself in food production and even become a net exporter of food items, eliminating the need for food importation. This assertion was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing in Abuja.

According to Idris, the decision aligns with efforts to boost investment in the agricultural sector, with a focus on both crop production and livestock development. He emphasized that this strategy aims to ensure food security and availability for Nigerians.

The statement came after a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors, during which Tinubu ruled out the establishment of a board to regulate food commodity prices and rejected the approval of food importation.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would implement schemes to support farmers, enabling them to increase food production.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for the rapid implementation of livestock development and management plans, including initiatives such as dairy farming.

The meeting, attended by top government officials, including the Vice President, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the DSS, took place amid protests in various states over the high cost of living and food prices. Tinubu expressed confidence that his administration could address the food crisis and ensure food security for the nation.
