The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Cross River State has destroyed a massive 30-hectare cannabis sativa plantation in Odukpani local government area. According to the state commander, Mrs. Rachel Umebuali, the operation led to the arrest of several suspects and the recovery of 163.9 kg of cannabis seeds. She expressed concern over local residents shielding drug dealers, stating that non-indigenes often exploit the area with the support of the community.
Between January and June 2025, the NDLEA seized a total of 6,716.8 kg of various illicit drugs, including 2,935 kg of cannabis sativa, 129.6 kg of methamphetamine, 47.7 kg of cocaine, 32.3 kg of heroin, and smaller quantities of psychotropic substances, opioids, and ecstasy. The agency also arrested 191 individuals and secured the conviction of 15 offenders within the same period.
Commander Umebuali highlighted the agency’s proactive approach to drug prevention through 191 sensitization programs in schools, markets, religious centers, and NGOs. With support from the state’s first lady, the NDLEA also concluded the annual Drug Day campaign themed “The Evidence is Clear: Invest In Prevention.” She, however, noted that the command continues to face challenges of underfunding and inadequate logistics.
