Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and a major Trump donor, demanded that all U.S. federal employees justify their work achievements via email by Monday night or risk termination.
Despite his warning, multiple federal agencies instructed staff to ignore the directive, leading to confusion and anxiety. Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), later extended the deadline but did not specify a new one.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sent the email to over two million workers, requesting a summary of their weekly accomplishments. Musk described it as a simple test of whether employees were engaged in their roles.
Trump praised the move, calling it an “ingenious” way to identify inactive workers. While many employees and managers resisted, Musk insisted that those who failed to respond would soon face consequences.
